An Asteroid is expected to safely pass Earth on December 24, but conspiracy theorists disagree

IF YOU point your telescope towards the skies this Christmas Eve, you will be met with an impressive sight. 

Look to the stars and you should be able to see this natural wonder.

It won’t be Santa and his reindeer stealing your gaze, instead it will be a giant asteroid flying past Earth.

The 2km long asteroid, known as 2003 SD220, has been monitored since 2003 when it was discovered by the Lowell Observatory Near-Earth Object Search program.

The prospect of a large asteroid hurling towards our planet sounds terrifying, but there is little cause for concern as it will be 6.7 million miles away from Earth.

In fact, a NASA report said the asteroid would come closer when it passes Earth for a second time in 2018.

“The 2015 apparition is the first of five encounters by this object in the next 12 years when it will be close enough for radar detection,” the report read.

Despite its distance from Earth, stargazers should still be able to spot the asteroid if clear, cloudless skies permit.

Not everyone seems to be buying the story, however, with conspiracy theorists suggesting the object hurtling toward Earth is actually something far more deadly.

That doesn’t look like Santa.

Doomsdayers are confident a tenth planet known as Nibiru — or Planet X — will collide with Earth in December.

It is an idea that has surfaced on multiple occasions over the past two decades.

In the late Nineties, a woman claimed aliens had placed an implant into her brain and used it to warn her of the event.

She claimed the collision would take place in 2003, but when nothing happened she quickly amended the date to 2012.

Despite another anticlimax, the online conspiracy theory community is confident the updated prediction of December this year is the real deal.

NASA debunked the myth on its website back in 2012, in order to ease the mind of the general public.

“Nibiru and other stories about wayward planets are an internet hoax. There is no factual basis for these claims. If Nibiru or Planet X were real and headed for an encounter with the Earth, astronomers would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye,” wrote NASA.

A conspiracy theory group known as Brussels Sprouts didn’t buy the explanation.

“We’re dealing with one of the biggest cover-ups in the history of mankind, and that’s saying a lot, because the competition is so fierce,” it wrote on a blog post.

I guess we just have to wait and see, although I would still be buying Christmas presents.
